The Importance of Physical Media in the Digital World…

In an era where almost everything has migrated to the digital realm, there is a growing nostalgia and appreciation for physical media.  As someone who creates and shares his ideas, I’ve always felt a pull towards tangible objects you can hold, touch and experience in a way that a screen just cannot replicate.  So beyond my paintings and larger less accessible ideas, I’ve decided to print stickers, postcards and maybe a few greeting cards!

This is not a rejection to digital art, it is an acknowledgment of what physical media brings to the table.  I deeply respect the skill and effort that goes into creating digital art, it is innovative, limitless and beautiful.  But there is something undeniably special about holding a piece of art in your hands and feeling its texture, weight and taking in its distinctive smell.

For me, it is not just about printing a design onto paper. It is about enhancing the experience. I want to make it exciting and memorable. Just like holding a gatefold vinyl album.  Lately I’ve been experimenting with finishes, different papers, lamination techniques, spot varnishes to create contrast and depth and gold foil to add a sense of luxury and uniqueness to these useless pieces of paper or card. These little details transform a simple postcard into something you might want to keep, tucked away in a drawer only to find years later, or better yet, licking a stamp and sending it to a friend just to say hi!

In a world dominated by the intangible, physical media is a reminder of the effort and care behind the art.  It’s an anchor, something real in a fleeting, fast moving digital landscape.  Holding a simple postcard or peeling a sticker feels personal, like the art has traveled beyond the ‘cloud’ and into your hands.

So, while I continue to admire the endless possibilities of digital platforms, I’ll keep printing and pushing the boundaries of physical media.  Because sometimes, the act of holding something cool is just as important as seeing it.

Think it, print it, share it…
